MANA AND MERMAIDS
This picture was taken from the
Japanese Mermaid Forest Tankubon.
The version of this picture that appeared in all Viz publications was in black and white.
Mana was stolen from a village as a young child by a group of women, and then locked away from the outside world. Mana's feet were bound together so that she was unable to walk, and, as she was unable to care for herself, she was instead attended to by the women of the village.
Yuta, a seemingly normal young man, accidentally found his way to the secret village where Mana lived. The other women who lived in the village rose up against the intruder, trying to kill him and prevent him from discovering their secrets. It was when the dead Yuta miraculously recovered from his wounds that the village women realized that Yuta was immortal. smile1.jpg
MANA

Yuta quickly realized that the women of the village were not normal... they were all of different ages, but they all looked alike. There were triplets and quadruplets and other groups of similar women. Yuta soon discovered that the village women were actually mermaids in human form. The mermaids used young girls essences (who they first made immortal) to make new forms and figures to replace their own aged bodies. smile2.jpg

YUTA
This picture was taken from the
Japanese Mermaid Forest Tankubon.
The version of this picture that appeared in all Viz publications was in black and white.
Mana was chosen by the mermaids for her beauty and potential to become immortal. Mana ate the mermaid's flesh and survived, not knowing what she had been fed or what had happened to her. Mana is rescued from her imprisonment by Yuta, and together they destroy the village of the mermaid-women.

Mana is very ignorant of the outside world, and can sometimes be petty and spoiled, as she was waited on and catered to the first fifteen years of her life. However, Mana is also very brave and fierce and would do anything to remain with Yuta, who she admires and begins to love, despite not knowing what love is exactly.

Some interesting Notes:

  • When Yuta first finds Mana she is fifteen years old.
  • Yuta says in this story, "I have been wandering about for hundreds of years." The number of years has not yet been specified.
  • We are told that Yuta's physical age is about 20.
  • This story takes place in Modern Japan.
  • We are told later that Yuta has been alive for 500 years.
  • Mana is the first truly immortal human besides himself that Yuta has found all five hundred years of his searching.
