Nae |
Nae
was a beautiful young woman who lived before World War
II. She was engaged to Eijiro, who she liked, but she
fell in love with Yuta. Her family secret was that they
had an urn with ashes of a mermaid, reputed to bring
people back to life and heal wounds. Because Nae had
heard of the mermaid's flesh, she believed Yuta when he
said he was immortal. Nae wanted to run away with Yuta,
and said she would meet him in the "Red Valley"
--a field of flowers where she had sprinkled the
Mermaid's ashes-- where the flowers never faded, wilted,
or died, lasting through every season. |
This story takes place in Modern
Japan and 1920's Japan. |

Yuta
cared about Nae, but he could not stay with her because
he was immortal, and because she was engaged to Eijiro.
So, although he agreed to meet her in Red Valley, instead
Yuta decided to leave Nae and move onto a new town. Yuta
never guessed that someone ELSE might be waiting for her
in the Red Valley... |

Nae, Yuta, Mana |
Yuta
did not go to the Red Valley to meet Nae because he knew
she would be happier without him.... or so he thought.
Little did he know that Eijiro felt wronged, and, instead
of Yuta, Eijiro went to go meet Nae. It turned out that
the ashes preserved a lot more than just the flowers...
And Nae NEVER forgot the promise she had made to Yuta...
to meet him at the Red Valley... even after her death.

Mana
starts to become more "grown-up" as the story
passes, in contrast to her complete ignorance of the
world in the first few stories. Mana has discovered that
she has "feelings" for Yuta... though she is
not exactly sure what they mean. She has been asked
before if Yuta is her boyfriend... by Towa from
"Mermaid's Forest"... and she at first replies
that he is just her "friend" and that they are
"traveling" together. Mana, however, later
starts to realize that she would never want to be without
Yuta. When Yuta finds out that Nae is still alive, she
becomes jealous. Yuta realizes that she has finally
"grown up" and that she has "fallen for
him."
